Picked up a mk4 golf yesterday. Has an aftermarket head unit in it, but doesnt appear to be working. Doesnt seem to be getting power. Checked fuses all okay. and all cables seem to be okay. Had another old headunit sitting that i tried, and same.

Anyone any suggestions?

Fuse 22 is for the headunit. Other than that is the wiring connected through an ISO harness or has somebody just joined the wires together? If it's an ISO harness the red and yellow are the battery live and ignition live usually so hook them up to a live and you should at least power up. Then plug in the speaker block n Earth it and you're golden.
