The only XL1 in Scotland was delivered today to Arnold Clark Volkswagen Crow Road in Glasgow. The car is one of only 200 made and will be on display for the public to see for a limited time.

The XL1 has a lithium-ion battery that can be charged with a domestic electric socket and a top speed of 160 km/h. It is powered by a 2-cylinder 47bhp 800cc diesel engine and a 26bhp electric motor that can reportedly cover 50 miles on battery power alone.

The impressive car is surprisingly shorter than the Volkswagen Polo, measuring 1665mm wide, 3,888mm long 1,153 tall and weighing just 795kg. Weight savings were made via the use of lightweight materials throughout, such as magnesium and ceramics; only 23.3 per cent of the vehicle is made from steel or iron.

Volkswagen created the XL1’s aerodynamic body with the help of wind tunnel engineers and designers removed wing mirrors, replacing them with internal real-time video screens, giving the car a futuristic look and feel. The vehicle was first unveiled to the world at the Geneva Motor Show in 2013.
